Common Questions

Why Offset?

• Take responsibility for your climate impact
• Strengthen your brand amongst customers, staff and other stakeholders

How do we go about it?

• Identify the shipment emissions with the use of our calculators
• Order the offset through the automated proceedure on the GreenSea webpages
• Communicate your climate strategy to the world

How do you perform your calculations?

GreenSea´s calculators determine the emissions from a shipment in accordance with a model reviewed and approved by Tricorona, a world leader in carbon offsetting, drawing in turn on work done by NTM, the Swedish Network for Transport and Environment.

What is GreenSea?

GreenSea is a project hosting user friendly calculators enabling emission calculations for marine activity. It is set up with a single goal to make it simple to offset a marine transport through the use of best data available in the market and online purchasing of offsetting. GreenSea is a solution that calculates emissions and neutralise these emissions through the purchasing CO2 neutralisation in CDM or Gold Standard projects. These projects are wind, biomass or small-scale hydroelectric power projects that meet the requirements of the Kyoto Protocol. They are analysed by independent accredited organisations, in order to ensure that the stated level of carbon reduction is genuinely achieved by the project.

Do I have to know the vessel, on which we are sending our goods?

No. At a minimum, you need to know the distance and weight, and approximately what size of vessel you are using. If you can provide additional information, then we can refine the calculation for a more exact result.

Where does the data for the calculations come from?

The basic data for the calculations comes from a range of sources including NTM, the Swedish Network for Transportation and Environment and distance tables and ships data from Lloyd’s Register.

How accurate are the results?

The results are based on an estimate of the fuel consumption, which varies considerably from engine to engine as well as through the differing use of marine diesel, HFO or other distilled fractions. There are also considerable variations in regard of speed, choice of route and load factor. The more detailed information you can provide, the more accurate we can calculate the emissions – but even when you only have basic data, we can make reasonable assumptions to produce a good estimate of the emissions, which can be viewed as a good average value for the calculated voyage and/or shipment.

How is the price calculated?

The price is based on the price of emissions reductions from the available projects. This price varies over time, and from project to project. The price is always based on a price per tonne, and is calculated as this price multiplied by the quantity of emissions reductions in tonnes. The price is specified exclusive of value-added tax.
