22.06.09 GreenSea recieved its first order today and the buyer is Markel International with the ship STELLA NOVA. All here on GreenSea hopes it will be a start for other companies to start compensate for their trips as well, contributing to a greener future.

 International Chamber of Shipping: "GHG Index too complex"
07.04.2009 The International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) warns that the formula for determining a ship's efficiency and corbon dioxide emissions developed by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO), the Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI), is at risk of bedoming too complex. "While it works well with simple-design vessels with straightforward propulsion, such as tankers and bulk carriers, it does not work with vessels with more complex propulsion systems," says the ICS according to Sustainableshipping.com.

 Bimco vill ha CO2-skatt
29.03.2009 Bimco:s president Philip Embiricos ska enligt uppgift ha uttryckt att han hellre ser en skatt på koldioxid än handel med utsläppsrätter för sjöfarten. Detta eftersom ett handelssystem skulle bli svårhanterligt och en skatt mer transparent. Frågan är aktuell eftersom Kyoto-avtalet som inte inkluderar sjöfarten ska få sin uppföljare nu i december, vilket möjligen resulterar i att sjöfarten inkluderas i avtalet.

 GreenSea attended the Green Ship Technology Conference
27.03.2009 Linnea Risinger and Sten Göthberg of GreenSea attended the two day "Green Ship Technology" conference in Hamburg arranged by Lloyd's List Events, starting on the 24th of March. Greenhouse gas emissions from shipping and possible actions to reduce them like emissions trading systems or levies, and especially technical solutions, were extensively discussed. The benefits of corporate social responsibility were also addressed.

 Singapore firm finds method to scrub out carbon dioxide?
18.03.2009 Singapore firm Ecospec claims to have invented and tested a patented method using alkaline sea water to scrub out greenhouse gases carbon dioxide and nitrogen oxides, sulphur dioxide which causes acid rain, and soot from ship exhausts.

 A.P. Moller-Maersk exploring CCS by sea vessels
17.03.2009 The Danish shipping and oil company A.P. Moller-Maersk is exploring ways of delivering carbon dioxide directly to CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) burial sites in the area of the North Sea using specially designed sea vessels instead of pipelines. There are already blueprints for these new vessels.

 Clean propellers can cut CO2 according to DNV
16.03.2009 Det Norske Veritas' Cheif Executive Henrik Madsen has said that a lot can be done by shipowners to reduce greenhouse gas emissions before a cap is introduced. Above all he is talking about "low hanging fruit", for example regularly cleaning propellers of biological material that accumulates and cause friction, which according to Madsen could reduce CO2 emissions by roughly 3 percent.

 Greece & China resist shipping emission cuts
11.03.2009 The Greek shipping ministry said this Tuesday that Greece and China's merchant navies have joined forces to resist compulsory greenhouse gas reductions targets and agreed that proposals by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) "must first be applied on a voluntary basis and must only become binding in the long term".

 Shipping 13 times more carbon effective than trucking
06.03.2009 Locally transported food often has a larger carbon footprint than food shipped a large distance, since ocean freight is 13 times more efficient than trucking. This is confirmed by a recent study by the Californian logistics provider Village Green Energy for the organic food distributor Essential Living Foods (ELF).
- Now at least we can say with conviction that shipping is more environmentally friendly as we have the hard figures," Amrit Khalsa of ELF tells Sustainableshipping.com.

 Green Shipping Summit on marine CO2 emissions
27.02.2009 Captain Anan Hari, Regional Manager (Asia) for BP Shipping Ltd, stressed during a Green Shipping Summit in Singapore 26 february 2009 the importance of a global agreement on reducing CO2 emissions, particularly since maritime carbon emissions are predicted to rise by 30% by 2020.

 SEAaT announces Emissions Trading Seminar for Shipping
27.01.2009 SEAaT, a "cross-industry, unique, pro-active and self funding group, whose mission is to encourage and facilitate efficient reduction of harmful emissions to air from shipping" announced an Emissions Trading Seminar for Shipping to take place on the 2nd April at the IMO in London.

 EU wants to include shipping in Kyoto 2
21.01.2009 Fairplay Dayly News writes today that the European Commission next week according to sources in Brussels will propose "that measures to cut air pollution from ships will be included in the successor to the Kyoto Convention on climate change".
The talks on a new climate change protocol to come into force after 2013 will take place in Copenhagen in December 2009.

 Strategic goals and recommendations for the EU maritime policy up to 2018 (swedish)
21.01.2009 These strategic goals and recommendations were adopted by the The European Commission today. This is the swedish translation. From section 4.1:
"4.1. Att förbättra miljöprestanda
Under de senaste åren har sjöfartsadministrationen och sjöfartsindustrin i EU gjort stora insatser för att förbättra miljöresultaten i sektorn. EU:s regelverk har skärpts och samarbetet med medlemsstaterna utökats när det gäller t.ex. förebyggande av olyckor och tillbud, atmosfäriska utsläpp, hantering av ballastvatten och återvinning av fartyg.
Insatserna måste fortsätta. Kommissionen, medlemsstaterna och EU:s sjöfartsindustri måste samarbeta för att uppnå det långsiktiga målet att ha en sjöfart utan avfall och utsläpp. I det syftet bör de främsta prioriteringarna vara följande:
– Att se till att det görs kontinuerliga framsteg i riktning mot en sammanhängande och omfattande strategi, som kombinerar tekniska, driftsmässiga och marknadsbaserade åtgärder, för att minska utsläppen av växthusgaser från den internationella sjöfarten.
– I detta avseende bör EU aktivt arbeta inom IMO för att minska utsläppen av växthusgaser från fartyg[1]. En rättsligt bindande ordning bör antas vid den konferens inom ramen för UNFCCC som kommer att äga rum i Köpenhamn i december 2009. Om det inte görs några framsteg bör EU lägga fram förslag på europeisk nivå."
[1] Tvingande minskningsåtgärder bör tillämpas på alla fartyg i världens flotta. I dag är mer än 75 % av världens flotta registrerad i länder som inte har undertecknat Kyotoprotokollet.

 Chamber of Shipping advocating trading scheme
12.01.2009 The Green IT Report writes that "the Chamber of Shipping, which represents UK-based commercial shipping, is advocating an open emissions trading scheme for global shipping." The President of the UK Chamber of Shipping also points out that since ships move between countries national emissions reduction regulations become ineffective.
